Toinen syy kisaan palaamiseen on vähemmän mukava.
Suurin muutos on HALO-turvakaaren ilmestyminen autojen ohjaamojen päälle. Toinen erilaisuus on parin uuden rengasseoksen mukaantulo.
DO SOMETHING!
I have to get back to the F1 season finale in Abu Dhabi for two different reasons. First of all, as it was great race for my country man, Valtteri Bottas, who took the victory in a stunning way. He won from pole and set also the race’s fastest lap. It was exactly what he needed for the winter break, as his second half of the season was not the greatest for Mercedes man. With the victory he gave the message to the bosses of Mercedes F1 team, that he is the man for the future, whatever will happen after next season. The other reason to get back to that race was less good. If you compare the top 10 in qualifying to the top 10 after the race, you will see that only man to lose his position was 10th place Felipe Massa, as Fernando Alonso overtook him during the race. The fact that Daniel Ricciardo, who qualified fourth, had to retire due to a technical reason, just moved the rest of the punch one step forward. Otherwise the top 10 qualifiers were exactly the same, and in same order, as the top 10 race finishers. Not good! Right after the race I said that it was dull race and was more or less as exciting as watching grass grow. Unfortunately. However, for us Finns and to all Bottas fans it was a great race but for F1 it was worst two hour ad you could think.
If the Grand Prix races are decided already in qualifying, it can’t be ok. Then something is wrong. Excitement of the race is gone and regardless of all the other fuss and show, which seems to be important for Liberty Media, it is not going to help. In principal, all races should end up in the same order as the qualifying, as the quickest one gets the pole and the rest follow in the order of their qualifying lap times. Luckily, there are variables, like bad or good starts or first lap accidents, but if those are only ways to mixed the order, it is not good enough. What was worst in Abu Dhabi was the fact that second place Lewis Hamilton and fifth place Max Verstappen said after the race that overtaking was impossible if you were too close the car in front of you. If one was too close, he would lose the downforce and that was it. Why it is so? I thought, and many others as well, that with these new 2017-cars, with wider tires, stronger engines, improved aerodynamics and faster lap times, overtaking should be easier. But no! It has been just the opposite. Who can we thank for that? The strategy group of clever engineers from different teams, I suppose? To me it looks like they don’t have the least idea how to improve the overtaking. Or for some reason they don’t want to do it. With these present cars the overtaking was too difficult even on the DRS-stretches, at least in Yas Marine Circuit. I keep wondering why is it so difficult to lesser the aerodynamics of these cars, like getting rid of the oversize front wing. Or why they still use the tyre-warmers? With these two eliminated the skills of the drivers could increase, as it should be in F1.
For next season the rules will be more or less the same as this season. The biggest change will be the HALO-driver protection above the cockpit. The effect on aero will be something, but I don’t think it will have any effect on overtaking at all. The other change will be the number of tire compounds, as next season there will be seven different compounds to choose from. They are extremely hard, hard, medium hard, soft, supersoft, ultrasoft and hypersoft. For each race Pirelli will bring three different compounds and the teams and drivers have to choose the 13 sets they think they will need for the race weekend. If you ask me, F1 should have been able to manage with three compounds, hard, super and hypersoft.
This season we saw too many one stop races. And in some circuits even non-stoppers would have been possible, but the rule requires to use at least two different compounds if it’s dry. One problem has been the fact that some of the compounds are too close in performance. In order to mix the strategies of different drivers and teams, the compound differences should be at least 1,5 seconds per lap. It could put more pressure on the men who are making the strategy calls.
Liberty Media has plenty of problems to solve, in order to make everybody happy. And what is worst is the fact that it is less than 110 days when the first winter testday comes around.
